Do’s and Don’ts - Be Prepared For The Unexpected!

Data loss is upsetting and can bring panic. PLEASE STOP and take a moment to understand what you should do in an unexpected data loss situation so that you don’t cause more damage and permanent data loss. Like everything, data recovery also has its Do’s and Don’ts. By keeping them in mind, you can overcome data loss mishaps.

Here’s a checklist of what to do and avoid while dealing with data recovery.

Do's:

  1. Stay calm and take a deep breath before taking any further steps.

  2. As you notice data loss, immediately stop using the device. Continuing to use the device overwrites the files & folders you’re trying to restore.

  3. Detach the removable storage device carefully and keep it in a safe place.

  4. Use data recovery software and attempt data recovery to restore your lost files.

  5. If the hard disk is undetected, reconnect it using a different cable.

  6. If the external drive is inaccessible, check the USB port and cable. Alternatively, try reconnecting it to another working PC.

  7. Shut the PC down immediately when you hear any hard disk grinding/clicking noise or the CPU heats up.

  8. Use an effective antivirus program to scan the PC for malware, virus, and other threats that can cause data loss.

  9. Contact a professional if you need assistance with what you are doing. Don’t take the risk!

Don'ts:

  1. Don’t panic. Before doing anything, take a moment to understand the situation.

  2. Never download or install the recovery software on the same storage device or hard drive partition from which you have lost data.

  3. Do not try to access non-responsive or physically damaged hard disks.

  4. Do not shake, re-assemble, attempt to repair a corrupt hard disk, heat, or freeze it, as improper handling can lead to permanent data loss.

  5. Never restore data on the same file system from which you lost it. It can lead to irreversible data loss and might overwrite the files.

  6. Don’t attempt to restore lost data if unsure of what to do next!

  7. Don’t format the disk. Consider using reliable data recovery software that can assist you in retrieving lost/missing/deleted files.

  8. Do not reinstall the operating system.

  9. Avoid saving data on the hard disk with bad sectors.

  10. Avoid downloading third-party applications from unknown/untrustworthy sites.

  11. Don’t browse the internet on the device in question.

  12. After losing data avoid creating, deleting, or repartitioning hard disk using third-party software or built-in methods.

  13. Do not run the CHKDSK command, as it might write the hard drive from where you’re trying to recover your precious files.

General Tips:

  1. Back up valuable files and folders regularly.

  2. Make multiple copies of data backup.

  3. Use reliable cloud backup solutions and keep data encrypted.

  4. Don’t forget to back up your important data if you are considering reinstalling, upgrading, or formatting the OS.

  5. Keep computers and external storage devices in a dry, safe, and dust-free environment.

  6. Avoid opening suspicious emails and attachments.

  7. Follow the No Drink and Food Policy when working on your laptop.
